Coach the coach sessions

This activity is to satisfy basic coach capability training needs so they can fulfill the role successfully within this limited situation.

Format

Presented to limited groups of coaches at in-person sessions. Video conference (Teams) is a reasonable substitute if necessary.

Description

Good coaching requires skill not typically found among team “members” as opposed to team “leaders.” But the coaches are drawn from peers as well as supervisors.+ Unless coaches possess three things, this change management element will fail. To succeed, coaches must:

  1. have knowledge and some ability (or at least understand and support) viz. the changes being implemented;
  2. be able to identify opportunities to support impacted people to accept and effectively make their own behaviour change(s); and
  3. possess some effective technique/skills.

This activity is to satisfy basic coach capability training needs so they can fulfill the role successfully within this limited situation. It is not intended to create fully-trained organizational coaches. Any residual benefit to the organization (e.g., more skilled non-people managers) is a bonus. Coach the coach training must, by necessity, include solution details as well as coaching technique.

Notes:

+   Some people are natural teachers or coaches, while others may have developed the skills outside the workplace. Generally, unlike employees streamed as people managers, people in non-supervisory roles have not been provided with coaching technique by the employer.
